I selected 90s jams which I used to listen to a lot in high school as well as some beats I discovered from Soundcloud digging. From classic joints by Slum Village, Pete Rock, Cella Dwealls and Edo G to Mr. Dibia$e, Fitz Ambro$e, Freddie Joachim, Moods and 14KT who are currently reppin’ the underground beat scene. Although I’ve always been a music consumer from day one, I’ve discovered that it was my true passion at around 2011. I was constantly digging for instrumental music and also started making mixes for fun. Since I didn’t have the patience to watch tutorials on Youtube, I trusted my instinct and let my ears guide me to blend my favorite tracks. To this day, I’m not even sure if I’m mixing the ‘right’ way. However, I believe there’s no right or wrong with music, I see it as a way to express ourselves freely with no set rules. Each of us have different perceptions due to the experiences we’ve encountered in life, which get expressed through our creations. Whether it’s a track or mix, I love feeling the emotion and energy it conveys. Music has really changed my life, connected me with similar souls and also helped me discover my true self. I’m grateful for virtual communities like Soundcloud and Twitter, which are my main sources for my music and connections. Of course real life communication and relationships are important but I’ve also been able to connect with such amazing people online, which led to real life friends. I want to give a special thanks to the Mellow Orange fam for letting me do this mix for their new ‘selector’ series, as well as the constant love and support they continue to give me. The aim was to introduce people to the music that we were listening to, and not that radio nonsense. I was listening to a lot of deep house music at the time and started listening to a lot of nu-jazz, the rest was history. That time really shaped my taste for music and I became even more aware of the stuff that I had been listening to, that I never understood. Never really got the Dilla obsession until "Dilla changed my life" hahaha. Fast-forward to this moment… Funny enough, I make a lot of mixes for myself, my mixes are more like my playlist in a couple of mixes. I used to travel a lot when I was back in joburg and I’d be listening to my mixes (I know that sounds a lil vain but its true). I often say that if I wasn’t a designer and photographer, I’d be a musician/producer. There is something about hearing a track that you’ve never heard before and it just moves you. That feeling has lead me to digging for all these dope unknown musicians and producers and I always find some of the dopest joints on soundcloud. Never thought that i would be a dj but now that I’m getting into this, I’m really enjoying being the driver (trying to take you there, musically, in my way) and trying to introduce people to that stuff that i discover everyday. I remember the bossanova band at the corner restaurant we used to frequent on the weekends, and the old folks playing the 'pandeiro' (Brazilian tambourine) in the main city plaza. Music was just another aspect of everyday life, the same way naps and soccer practice was. It wasn't until much later that I started to take real notice of Brazilian music, and odd enough, through discovering hiphop. I was fortunate enough to experience the tail end of 'golden age hiphop' in my high school days when artists like Pharcyde, TCQ and De La Soul sampled dusty jazz records. Ofcourse I didn't know what sampling was at the time but I did find out that Bossanova was conceived between Jazz and Samba. It was like all the dots connected in my head, I re-encountered the 'saudade' of Bossanova within those beats, and how much I yearned for that melancholic but cool vibe! When I moved to the States for college I started to dig for Jazz, hiphop and Brazilian records like crazy, as if searching for a deeper connection within me. I still holds those records as my treasure. I've always wanted to make a Brazilian hiphop mix but never got around to it, partially because I find it hard to keep it ALL Brazilian style. So I want to thank Yusai and the MO famalam for the great opportunity to make this happen, it's been a long time coming. In making the mix, I feel I did a fair job in capturing the hiphop and Brazilian vibe equally as strong. I wish I included more Brazilian artists but there are just way too many dope tunes to squeeze in just under a hour. I guess I'll leave it to the next assignment. As the World Cup is approaching here in Brazil, I hope this mix finds a way in your summer party selection. Um abraço" - Kentachis -- playlist 01. Radio Intro 02. I'd hit up the local record store every week, and my homie who worked there would put me on to the classics: James Brown, Curtis Mayfield, The Meters, Sly & The Family Stone, Funkadelic, etc. I really got into it, and eventually, ended up hosting my own radio show dedicated to classic funk, soul, and hip-hop. It wasn't until after college that I started getting into post-disco and early 80's r&b, or "boogie." The sounds that came out of that era were the building blocks of hip-hop, electro, and house as we know it, so I think it was a natural progression for me to start digging the roots of the music I loved. It's no secret that I've been heavy in the boogie zone for the past several years now. As a member of Sweater Funk, San Francisco’s weekly dance party dedicated to top shelf boogie funk, steppers, and modern soul on original vinyl, I'm constantly digging for undiscovered gems. Sweater Funk is like church... I go to get inspired, hangout with friends, and even catch the spirit on the dance floor. But instead of praying, we geek out to records! It's guaranteed that someone from the crew (there's 13 of us, by the way) will play a heater, and everyone will just freak out! It's kinda silly, but you just have to go and experience it. For those who don't know, Sweater Funk goes down every Sunday night at The Knockout in Outer Mission… Shameless plug, had to do it! When Mellow Orange asked me to put this mix together, I decided to focus on new music coming out of the modern funk scene… This mix features some of my favorites: Dam-Funk, Onra, Amalia, Max Kane & Teeko, The Pendletons, XL Middleton, and Sweater Funk's own K-Maxx. I even threw in some future soul joints for good measure. :-) Shout out to independent labels like PPU, Omega Supreme, Mo Funk, Voltaire Records, Sound Boutique, and Cherries Records who are devoted to releasing new modern funk & r&b music on vinyl (and even cassette!) If you dig what you hear, join the movement by supporting these artists, labels, record shops, your local music scene, and help keep the funk alive. Props to Yusai for giving me the opportunity to share with y'all… Thanks for listening and stay mellow!" ~ Proof Track List: Loose Shus "Ladies" (Voltaire Records) Seven Davis Jr. "Word" (Izwid) Dam-Funk "Cut It Out f. I Keep track of various blogs and websites to stay updated with the smoothest magic. It all really started back in 2011 when friends of mine wanted me to keep them updated with the latest additions to my personal music library. That's when I began releasing monthly compilation albums, called the "Art In Melodies" series. After a few years, I decided to form a group with fellow music enthusiasts to share our addiction for music with the world. Thanks to today's technology, I was able to freely learn the perks of creating what I love. I was spending hours behind a desk exploring the world of Abelton. Music has always been a big part of my life and it's been a bigger part since I began producing. [WHY?] I Started with sampling my dad's Jazz and Soul records, pumping a groovy beat under it and played it over and over for a week. At the end of the day I'd never share it. But somewhere along this year, I've finally found the guts to publish my work. The mixtape I crafted for the Mellow Orange fam contains the music I enjoy listening to the most. Dragging you back to down memory lane with artists like ATCQ, Hieroglyphics and Tefelar. Giving you the feels with the relaxing sounds of KA-YU, Bhonstro and Slakah The Beatchild. I started actually playing records when I was about 5 years old, I can remember looking at the back of my moms Brass Construction album and seeing the whole band lined up with all their instruments and wild ass outfits and wondering what the record sounded like... Then I flipped the switch on the record player and watched the needle drop and soon as I heard the horns on the song Movin, it was a wrap!!! Flash forward some years to the early 90's and I mean EARLY!!! I ended up sneaking into and eventually working at one of San Diego's BEST night clubs, the infamous Ole' Madrid and cut my teeth playing records in between bar backing and bussing tables and eventually had my own night there. I was lucky to be surrounded every week by SF / LA / NY 's BEST DJ's from Greyboy, Orlando, Daz & Marques Wyatt and the whole Brass Posse, Julias Papp, Mark Farina & The Mushroom Jazz Crew, Towa Tei, Dmitri & Lady Miss Kier not to mention EVERY Hip Hop Dj from all over the world!!! I was pretty lucky to put it lightly... But any who, a few years after that I help start a little Hip Hop group The Sound Providers and went on to make a string of successful records on the ABB Imprint before we eventually disbanded in early 2002. I set out to make a solo album after that and worked with some of the industry's best at the time including Kev Brown, 9th Wonder, Pete Rock & Grap Luva, Dynamo Productions and Geoff Barrows from Portishead and eventually released a full length album with My cousin under the name The Upstarts. I've always been into a variety of music other than Hip Hop, Soul and the usual music that is associated with the type of music I made. I enjoy playing different types of genre's because it makes me appreciate the craftsmanship that goes into making music and it doesn't pigeon hole me into one " type " of sound and I also don't worry what other people think in terms of what I am playing because I feel like a lot of cats out there are just fronting any way LOL So I decided to go with a groovy dance oriented mix with some classics and some obscure joints sprinkled with the right amount soul and funk. Fell in love with jazz at the age of 13, front seat of my father's car on our drives to school. Spent earlier years collecting 90's r&b albums. Tried to love everything as much as I loved music as I got older, but about two years ago I realized music was the only thing I ever felt safe committing and connecting to/with. Psych and English degree's and there I went, dropped what was expected from "life" and moved to Brooklyn to follow my dreams. Never been this happy in my life. I've put out mixes for different websites and they're all usually more equipped with up 808's and experimental sounds but for this one, I wanted to make sure I kept it real with myself/soul. I wanted this mix to represent my roots, the jazz and drums that taught me what love was and made me who I am. I'm a DJ/producer who was raised in Miami, a city well known for it's drum & bass scene, still knowing I always felt more inspired by artist like Billie Holiday or J Dilla. With this mix, I wanted to make sure I kept your heads nodding but your hearts real warm for 40+ minutes. From Miami to Brooklyn, now a resident of Atlanta. Just press play and vibe with me. Since then Hip Hop has become my passion. I like tracks with boom bap drums and strong messages that convey various aspects of life such as struggle, peace, love and joy. Hip Hop has helped me survive tough times in my life. After getting two turntables and a mixer I would go to the record stores in San Francisco every week to dig for records of 90's jams and more recent underground joints. Early Jay Dee productions had the biggest influence on me. My recent favorite Hip Hop artists include Joey Bada$$, Joe Styles, and Roc Marciano just to name a few. I'm also a fan of producers in the current beat scene who have an essence of Hip Hop, such as Dibia$e, Budamunk, Elaquent, Knxwledge, Ill Sugi, Fitz Amro$e, and Wun Two.
